Best Cartoon Ever…

Okay, I’ve never been much into Anime’, but I watched one over the last few days that was absolutely stunning. It’s called Elfen Lied.

It was sad and managed to create some very specific states. I’ve noticed a few japanese movies can create such specific atmosphere that it’s like remembering my own dreams, or nightmares. The ones where some very odd things are happening, and the charactors start to interact with the story in such frail and complex ways… and their personalities are so overwhelmingly present, causing failures and successes in the deep personal particulars. I seldom see that with American films. Even Takishe Mike (yes, THAT Takishe Mike, The Audition, Visitor Q, and Ichi the Killer) manages to create some really odd and specific states.

I like that, it’s cool art. I wonder if I notice it because I’m an outsider. There is some similarities in the states created by several of my favourite japanese movies, and I wonder if I am experiencing cultural states that Japanese people would take for granted. Even so, I still like the feelings.

I invented a new game.

I wanted to practice balance on wobble boards. I had heard that catching tennis balls was hard, so I did a few shots, got some tennis balls, and set about to throwing and catching with my sister whilest standing on the boards. Fun and hard.

I would like to practice walking accross groups of them. For that I need several boards, but I was only able to find two of them on special at SatanMart. So instead of walking accross rows of them I discovered it is a fun challenge to step from one to the next, turn around and pick up the one behind me and then set it in front of me, step onto it, and repeat the process. It’s slow going and very challenging but it definately excercises the ol’ sense of balance.

For several months I did archery each day as a way to augment stance practice (always focusing on stance during shooting — Stance Stance Stance. I never shoot anything without focusing on stance). I still did regular standing Wujifa, but the archery would give me a little more. When I hurt my knee and stopped standing, I also set aside the archery. Now that I am doing stance again, I hope doing wobble board workouts can augment the extra balancing ability that stance contributes to me. The wobble boards give me a neat chance to practice balance.. I notice I tighten and hold a lot whilest playing the more difficult wobbling games.. if I can eventually do it and relax, well… that’d be great!
